Relocation Project,
Regent Park x OCAD U (2019)

This project was a community driven collaboration that shared the exchange of different skillsets. On one side there are design students that offer their own set of design skills, the other is the sewing community of Regent Park and their own skillset to produce soft goods.

As an initiative to support a local community, this project resulted in a public gallery showcasing at the end of the semester. The public gallery event, displayed the variety of soft good products that were developed over the course of the semester. The variety of soft goods were developed through research on the historic and current history of Regent Park, which was used to create soft good products that reflected each design students design direction.

Process Work

This was a large development project that spanned over the course of the semester, the focus of the project was to experience and develop, as a designer, an understanding for different aspects of design focuses. This project was based around the aspect of Circular Design. The theme of each design students soft good product was Identity Materialized.

At the beginning of this project, design students were assigned to develop a research analysis on the historical background and the current state of the Regent Park community. Using the historical research, each student would design a soft good product that would reflect the design direction that they wished to represent within their product.

Part of the project, that required all design students to participate, was planning the entire gallery event. Assigning each person to a role that managed a different aspect of the event, was important to the success of being able to showcase the work of each student and the sewing community.

As a final result to the cumulative effort of everyone involved, the gallery event was successful. Being able to showcase the collaborative work of the design students and the Regent Park Sewing Community was an experience that was gratifying and rewarding at the end. This was one of the few projects/experiences that translated to a more insightful and career developing experience.
